When Cloverfield was first advertised, it was shown as a trailer in the film Transformers. There is nothing unusual about that, exept when you consider the fact that when it was first advertised, the trailers never mentioned the name of the film, just its release date and some footage from the film. By advertings the film in such a way, it got the potential viewers to go home and look up on the internet what the film is called and what it is about. When they got on the site, they were met wiv just a few pictures that are directly from the film or related to the films plot line, and as the release date grew closer, more pictures were added, with dates and times to go along with them. The advertising campaign created a huge buzz about the film, but after a short while, it soon calmed down. A teaser poster was released shortly befor the hype disappeared, but this also remained without the films title.
In mid-December, the official advertisments and trailers came out, which included the name of the film, and clips from throughout the film, rather than just one section. This then restarted the hype that surrounded the movie when the first trailer was released.
Another advertising campaign done for the movie was to create fake internet companies and involve some of the characters with jobs in the comopanies and also get two of the characters to create an ongoing video blog where they would messages each other and the public could see what wqas going on, which helps to get more information on the background of the characters and become more aware of the plot line.
There are a couple of elements in the advertising of this film that are similar to the advertising done for the film The Blair Witch Project. These include the fake websites made for the film, as a fake documentary was placed on the internet to convice viewers that the film they would see when watchin The Blair Which Project is real, when realy it was all fake. The documentary even included fake news reports and interviews with actors pretending to be proffesors and sherrifs.
